GOVERNOR INSTITUTES NEW CABINET-LEVEL LABOR POSITION
This week, Governor
Gray Davis appointed Steve Smith as the new acting
Secretary of Labor. The cabinet-level position will oversee the state's new
Labor and Workforce Development Agency. CFA has a long working relationship
with Smith, who has been working in the Davis administration as the Director
of Industrial Relations.
Governor Davis'
reorganization plan establishing the new agency, became
effective on July 1 with the signing of CFA-supported SB 1236 (Alarcon-D).
The Labor Secretary will oversee operations of the state Department of
Industrial Relations, the Employment Development Department, the California
Workforce Investment Board and the Agricultural Labor Relations Board. These
departments have over 14,000 employees and a combined budget of $8.97
billion.
